India's Central Bank Marks Historic Rate Cut Amid Economic Challenges

In a significant policy shift, India's new central bank governor has reduced interest rates for the first time in nearly five years to bolster a slowing economy threatened by escalating global risks. The Reserve Bank of India's six-member monetary policy committee, chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, unanimously voted to decrease the benchmark repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%—the first reduction since May 2020—aligned with expectations from most of the 44 economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

Governor Malhotra emphasized in his address from Mumbai that the new monetary policy aims to prioritize growth while managing inflation, which opened up space to shift the focus. Friday's rate cut represents a departure from the unchanged interest rates maintained for two years under former governor Shaktikanta Das, as inflation hovered above the 4% target. However, with inflation now reduced to 5.2% as of December, the economic growth rate also slowed to a four-year low of 6.4% for the year ending March 2025.

Despite the downturn, the central bank projects a recovery with growth expected to surge to 6.7% in the upcoming fiscal year starting April 1st, contrasted with the government's forecast range of 6.3%-6.8%. On the inflation front, the Reserve Bank of India anticipates an average figure of 4.2%. Meanwhile, markets reacted to the interest rate decision with bond yields rising and stocks falling slightly, indicating a complex economic sentiment.
