The surge in steel demand in India, propelled by infrastructure projects and housing needs, has given rise to small, polluting sponge iron plants. These facilities, which are cheap and quick to construct, employ low-grade iron ore and coal, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. According to data from IndexBox, India's steel consumption is expected to grow at 6% annually through 2035, indicating long-term demand pressure on production facilities.

Despite government efforts to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, the prevalent use of coal in India's steel industry complicates these environmental objectives. The small-scale sponge iron units, often criticized for their inefficiency and pollution, were expected to be replaced by more sustainable operations. However, their rapid construction capability makes them appealing amidst soaring demand.

Data from India's government highlights that 26 new sponge iron units were established by March 2024, emphasizing the industry's growth trajectory. Notably, these facilities contribute to significant carbon emissions, with the steel sector accounting for about 12% of India's overall emissions, as noted by the Bloomberg report.
