Indonesia's Bold Plan to Retire Coal Plants in 15 Years

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto announced the nation's ambitious plan to retire all coal power plants within the next 15 years, as reported by Bloomberg. This announcement was made during the G-20 Summit in Brazil, where President Prabowo also disclosed plans to phase out all fossil fuel plants and aim for more than 75 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity in the same period. The country is optimistic about achieving net zero emissions before 2050, a target that is in advance by a decade compared to its existing goals.

President Prabowo's initiative represents a significant shift for Indonesia, which currently relies heavily on coal and natural gas for electricity, with these sources contributing to nearly 80% of the energy mix. According to BloombergNEF data, as of the previous year, the nation had less than 1 gigawatt of combined wind and solar capacity installed. The plan reflects a more aggressive approach to carbon emission reduction, despite ongoing challenges. Previous efforts under Prabowo's predecessor involved a $20 billion deal with multinational funders to expedite the retirement of coal plants, albeit with limited progress so far.

To support this transition, Indonesia is leveraging palm oil production to increase biofuel output and intends to utilize its vast rainforests for generating more than 550 million tons of carbon credits. Nonetheless, the stakes are high in light of the substantial economic reliance on coal exports. IndexBox data highlights that in 2023, Indonesia's coal export value reached USD 42.9 billion, though down from USD 54.6 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, major coal importers include Australia, Russia, and China, with Australia importing USD 1.6 billion worth of coal from Indonesia in 2023.
