Inflation Concerns Persist as Federal Reserve Awaits Important Data

The Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation is expected to have accelerated in December, maintaining pressure on interest rates. According to Yahoo Finance, a Bureau of Economic Analysis report due Wednesday suggests consumer prices, as measured by Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), likely increased by 2.6% over the past year. This would mark the third consecutive monthly rise, climbing from 2.4% in November, the fastest annual pace since May.

While this report will arrive too late to impact the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision this week, it could serve as a significant consideration for the next meeting in March. Fed officials are anticipated to maintain the federal funds rate within the current range of 4.25% to 4.50% in January. Despite recent interest rate reductions following an end to a two-decade high, inflation has persisted, keeping further rate cuts on hold.

The focus remains on "core" inflation measures, excluding volatile food and energy prices. Core inflation is expected to remain steady at 2.8% in December, aligning with November's figures but still above the Fed's target. The distinction between PCE and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) becomes particularly relevant here, as the CPI's December data revealed a rise, albeit with cooling core measures.
