Insurers Expand U.S. Market Presence Amid Rising Catastrophe Risks

International and domestic insurers are expanding their footprint in the U.S. insurance market for hard-to-protect homes, capitalizing on high premiums and strong profit margins following the exit of some U.S. firms. Reuters reports that this has been largely due to escalating losses from natural disasters in states like Florida and California, leading giants like Allstate and State Farm to retract their coverage.

The insurance gap left by these domestic players has been increasingly filled by international firms such as Hiscox and Munich Re. These companies have tapped into the lucrative market for excess and surplus lines (E&S), which have become more prominent as extreme weather events become regular occurrences. Data from IndexBox suggests that U.S. E&S homeowner premiums are expected to soar beyond $3 billion in 2024, an increase from $1.2 billion in 2018, underscoring the heightened demand and rising premium rates.

Real estate in states at high risk for natural catastrophes, including California, Florida, and Louisiana, has seen a significant growth in this sector, according to the U.S. Insurance Information Institute. Industry professionals highlight that homeowners in these areas experience premium increases of up to 100%, seeking coverage options from the surplus lines market, which are not subject to state insurance approval for rate changes.

The potential for profitability in the E&S market is notable. Fitch reports that the overall combined ratio for property E&S business was at a profitable 66% in the previous year, compared to 93% in 2022. Despite this, the added risk from these complex policies cannot be overlooked, as stated by Robert Greensted from S&P Global, who notes that "the potential for profitability is obviously there, but there is additional risk."

The evolving landscape has also prompted U.S. insurers, some of whom have minimized their presence in admitted lines, to bolster their E&S operations, offering specialized solutions tailored to meet the demands of markets underserved by traditional insurance models.
