International Paper Reviews Strategic Options and Closes Georgetown Mill

According to a recent press release, International Paper has announced a comprehensive review of strategic options for its global cellulose fibers (GCF) business, along with the closure of its Georgetown, S.C. pulp and paper mill by the end of 2024. This move aligns with the company's long-term vision to prioritize sustainable packaging solutions.

Strategic Review of GCF Business

International Paper's GCF business, which generated $2.9 billion in revenue in 2023, is a key player in producing high-quality absorbent pulp for a variety of personal care applications, as well as specialty pulp used in textiles and construction materials. "Our team is well-positioned to win with attractive customers in the growing global fluff pulp market," noted Clay Ellis, Senior Vice President of Global Cellulose Fibers.

The strategic review is aimed at maximizing shareholder value by potentially redefining the company's focus within the market. As the review is in its early stages, the company has retained Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC as a financial advisor. However, there is no guarantee that the review will result in any specific transaction or outcome.

Georgetown Mill Closure

The decision to close the Georgetown mill will affect 526 hourly and 148 salaried employees, who will receive severance benefits and support services. Despite the closure, International Paper aims to retain the mill's capacity by shifting production to other facilities.

In 2023, the United States reported a pulp consumption volume of 7.795 million tons, with production reaching 9.224 million tons. The export volume stood at 7.575 million tons, while the import volume was 6.145 million tons, according to IndexBox data. These figures underscore the importance of strategic decisions in maintaining International Paper's competitive positioning within a fluctuating market landscape.

Impact on the U.S. Pulp Market

International Paper's alignment with global market trends is critical given the competitive backdrop. As one of the largest recyclers and producers in the world, the company's strategic shifts will likely influence the broader dynamics within the U.S. pulp market.
