Investcorp Plans Public Listing with Double Asset Growth

Davos, Switzerland - Investcorp, the largest alternative investment firm in the Middle East, is contemplating a public listing within the next three to five years, according to its vice chairman, Rishi Kapoor. The news, originally reported by Finance Yahoo, highlights Investcorp's ambitious plans to double its assets under management from $55 billion to $100 billion.

Kapoor, also the chief investment officer of Investcorp, mentioned during the Reuters Global Markets Forum that the firm is considering London or New York as potential venues for its public offering. “Three to five years is appropriate for us to build that scale. I think that puts us in a good spot to seek an opportunity to provide liquidity or value crystallization to our shareholders,” Kapoor noted on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos.

Founded in 1982 in Bahrain, Investcorp is renowned for having taken luxury brands like Gucci and Tiffany & Co public. It has since diversified into other sectors including private credit. The potential listing is part of a broader trend in the alternative investment industry, which saw significant M&A activity last year, with major players like BlackRock and General Atlantic pursuing acquisitions to diversify their asset bases.

In the Middle East, National Bank of Kuwait's alternative investment business was recently acquired by global asset manager Janus Henderson. According to data from IndexBox, the alternative investment market has been expanding steadily, indicating robust growth prospects for firms like Investcorp.

Looking ahead, Kapoor also touched on the potential of integrating alternative investments into the U.S. 401(k) retirement savings plans, which represent approximately $12 trillion. He expressed interest in participating in this evolving market directly or through partnerships if regulatory environments allow such allocations. "There is a natural progression towards democratization of private market assets ...and the next natural evolution for that would be for it to be an integral part of that 401(k) system," Kapoor commented.

While alternative assets remain less liquid compared to public markets, Kapoor emphasized the importance of prudent risk management when considering their inclusion in retirement funds. "So it won't be a big number, but when you're taking a small percentage of a very large number, it's a large dollar figure," he explained.
