In a strong appeal to Brussels, investors managing a colossal 6.6 trillion euros in assets have cautioned the European Union against diluting its sustainability regulations as reports outline plans by the bloc to reduce the regulatory burden on green finance. Brussels intends to issue a proposal this month that aims to ease the reporting requirements necessitated by its current sustainability policies, a move that has elicited both support and concern among European businesses. Investor groups such as the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, the European Sustainable Investment Forum, and the Principles for Responsible Investment issued a joint statement stressing that a dramatic reworking of the existing framework might sow regulatory confusion and risk stalling the momentum of the European Green Deal.

During discussions, notable financial institutions like AXA Investment Managers and L&G Asset Management signed the statement which pointed out that reopening these regulations even partially could create an unpredictable investment climate. The European Commission's plans include modifications to corporate sustainability reporting, the due diligence obligations concerning human rights and environmental factors in supply chains, and policies defining climate-positive investments. This initiative is seen as a counterpart to U.S. President Donald Trump's deregulatory policies, offering businesses a reprieve from what some see as an onerous compliance environment.

While there is substantial support for simplifying regulatory procedures for small enterprises, major member countries such as Germany and France are advocating for more extensive delays in enforceability. Leo Donnachie, senior policy manager at the IIGCC, warned that the loss of access to corporate sustainability information could impede vital investments as Europe strives to compete with powerhouses like the U.S. and China in the realm of clean technology. On the contrary, some industry experts argue that the current standards impose excessive bureaucratic burdens, pointing to the statements of Patricia Volhard, head of European Funds Regulatory practice at Debevoise & Plimpton. In light of these contrasts, former ECB chief Mario Draghi notes the urgent need for a colossal 800 billion euros annually in investments to maintain economic competitiveness.

Donnachie advises that while technical simplifications to sustainability rules are welcome, any moves to delay or completely overhaul them risk fostering a volatile economic environment. The balance between regulatory simplification and maintaining progressive ecological accountability remains a critical discussion point as the EU finalizes its proposals.
