Investors Pull Largest Share from U.S. Equity Funds in Over a Decade

Investors withdrew a net $50.2 billion from U.S. equity funds over the week ending December 18, marking the biggest net outflow since September 2009. Reuters reports that this outflow comes as investors cashed in on profits ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision announcement.

Data reflects a consistent trend of pullbacks from key fund categories, including large-cap, small-cap, multi-cap, and mid-cap funds, which saw withdrawals of $20.93 billion, $5.41 billion, $3.91 billion, and $2.85 billion, respectively. Notably, U.S. sectoral funds also faced net sales for the third week in a row, with technology and healthcare sectors witnessing substantial outflows of $1.32 billion and $324 million. The financial sector, however, attracted $578 million in net inflows.

Further highlighting the shift, U.S. debt funds encountered a decline in demand for the first time in 29 weeks, with a net withdrawal of $2.1 billion, as U.S. government bond funds recorded the largest weekly outflow since the start of October, at $2.23 billion. In contrast, general domestic taxable fixed income and loan participation funds reported inflows of $2.08 billion and $1.01 billion, respectively.

Additionally, U.S. money market funds experienced their fourth weekly outflow in five weeks, amounting to $28.07 billion, underscoring a broader trend towards liquidity and caution among investors amidst a dynamically shifting economic landscape.
