Italian Companies Partner with Government to Boost African Agriculture

Rome's latest development initiative in Africa sees a collaboration between Italian aerospace giant Leonardo and the agro-industrial group BF, aimed at fostering agricultural growth across the continent. According to a Reuters report, the agreement was signed on Friday, marking a significant step in the so-called Mattei plan. Initially focused on nine countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria, this plan seeks to stimulate economic growth and reduce immigration pressures into Italy.

With Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently announcing an extension of the four-year plan to include Angola, Ghana, Mauritania, Tanzania, and Senegal, the initiative now encompasses 14 countries. A fusion of space technology and sustainable agriculture forms the core of this initiative. Leonardo, under the leadership of Chairman Stefano Pontecorvo, will contribute space-monitoring technology through Telespazio, a joint venture involving French partner Thales and its satellite subsidiary e-Geos. Simultaneously, BF's agricultural projects, bolstered by a 400 million euros investment plan over three years and state-supported loans, aim to enhance crop yield and address challenges of climate change, soil erosion, and resource management.

The collaboration aligns seamlessly with these trends, promising the local population the necessary tools and skills to optimize land use.

Beyond the immediate partnership, the Italian government's diplomatic adviser, Fabrizio Saggio, highlighted the ambition to secure further agreements with other Italian corporates across strategic sectors identified jointly with African nations involved. By prioritizing a non-colonialist approach, the initiative seeks to empower local communities with enhanced agricultural capabilities.
