Italy Bottled Water Exports
In 2024, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of bottled waters, when their volume decreased by -16.7% to 1.5B litres. Overall, exports, however, recorded a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 448%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 8.2B litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water exports dropped to $838M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2014 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, exports increased by +34.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2023 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $914M, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country
the United States (403M litres), France (315M litres) and Switzerland (192M litres) were the main destinations of bottled water exports from Italy, together accounting for 60% of total exports. Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($384M) remains the key foreign market for bottled waters exports from Italy, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($92M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 6.2% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +11.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-0.6% per year) and Switzerland (+2.9% per year).
Exports by Type
Mineral or aerated waters (1.5B litres) was the largest type of bottled waters exported from Italy, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by non-mineral or non-aerated waters (20M litres), with a 1.3% share of total exports.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the volume of mineral or aerated waters exports stood at +2.1%.
In value terms, mineral or aerated waters ($829M) remains the largest type of bottled waters exported from Italy, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by non-mineral or non-aerated waters ($9.4M), with a 1.1% share of total exports.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of mineral or aerated waters exports stood at +4.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2024, the bottled water price amounted to $548 per thousand litres (FOB, Italy), picking up by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 182% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($953 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($162 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
