Italy Cotton Fabric Exports

In 2023, shipments abroad of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 6.9% to 173M square meters, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports fell to $950M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Exports by Country

Tunisia (21M square meters), Romania (15M square meters) and France (14M square meters) were the main destinations of cotton fabric exports from Italy, together comprising 29% of total exports. Spain, Germany, Turkey, Morocco and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Moreover, woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 exceeded the volume of the second product type, woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (40M square meters), twofold. Woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing more than 200g/m2 (24M square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2015 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 exports amounted to +22.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (+4.4% per year) and woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing more than 200g/m2 (+11.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the cotton fabric price stood at $5.5 per square meter (FOB, Italy), which is down by -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 6.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $21 per square meter. From 2019 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($10 per square meter), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($1.9 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
