Frozen Fruit Price in Italy Shrinks 5% to $2,577 per Ton After Two Consecutive Months of Contraction

Italy Frozen Fruit Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the frozen fruit price stood at $2,577 per ton (CIF, Italy), dropping by -4.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 9.3% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $3,296 per ton in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($3,879 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($1,116 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Italy Frozen Fruit Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) ($2,867 per ton), while the price for frozen strawberries ($1,532 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) (-0.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

Italy Frozen Fruit Imports

In February 2023, overseas purchases of frozen fruits increased by 44% to 5.1K tons, rising for the second month in a row after four months of decline. Overall, imports showed a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 56% month-to-month.

In value terms, frozen fruit imports soared to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 56% against the previous month.

Italy Frozen Fruit Imports by Type

In February 2023, frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) (3K tons) constituted the largest type of frozen fruit supplied to Italy, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black-, white- or red currants and gooseberries (1.2K tons), twofold.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black-, white- or red currants and gooseberries (+1.7% per month) and frozen strawberries (+3.5% per month).

In value terms, frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) ($8.5M) constituted the largest type of frozen fruit supplied to Italy, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black-, white- or red currants and gooseberries ($3.2M), with a 25% share of total imports.

Italy Frozen Fruit Imports by Country

Egypt (661 tons), Poland (653 tons) and Ukraine (500 tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fruit imports to Italy, with a combined 35% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Serbia, Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Portugal and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 54%.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Latvia (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fruit suppliers to Italy were Austria ($1.6M), Ukraine ($1.6M) and the Netherlands ($1.4M), with a combined 35% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Serbia, Lithuania, Germany, Egypt, Latvia, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 55%.

Among the main suppliers, Latvia, with a CAGR of +15.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
