Italy's Sign Export Grows by 9%, Reaching $58M in 2023
Italy Sign Exports
In 2023, sign exports from Italy rose significantly to 3K tons, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2015 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last eight years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +33.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4K tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sign exports rose notably to $58M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2015 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
The United States (961 tons) was the main destination for sign exports from Italy, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, sign exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (434 tons), twofold. France (171 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.7% share.
From 2015 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to +54.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+14.7% per year) and France (+2.7% per year).
In value terms, France ($11M) remains the key foreign market for sign exports from Italy, comprising 18% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($4.6M), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.7% share.
From 2015 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France stood at +13.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+16.3% per year) and Germany (+6.9% per year).
Exports by Type
Metal advertising signs (2.3K tons) was the largest type of sign exported from Italy, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, metal advertising signs exceeded the volume of the second product type, illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates (718 tons), threefold.
From 2015 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of metal advertising signs exports amounted to +9.0%.
In value terms, illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates ($32M) and metal advertising signs ($26M) appeared to be the most exported types of sign from Italy worldwide.
Metal advertising signs, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the sign price amounted to $19,305 per ton (FOB, Italy), with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $19,707 per ton in 2022, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($61,350 per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($4,012 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2015 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+13.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
