Italy Sees a 3% Rise in Stationery Product Exports, Reaching $159 Million in 2023

Italy Stationery Product Exports

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of stationery products, when their volume decreased by -11.3% to 28K tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 43K tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery product exports amounted to $159M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 14%. Exports by Country

Germany (4.2K tons), France (3.6K tons) and Spain (2.5K tons) were the main destinations of stationery product exports from Italy, with a combined 37% share of total exports. Albania, the United States, the UK and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2015 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for stationery product exported from Italy were the United States ($22M), France ($21M) and Spain ($17M), together accounting for 38% of total exports.

The United States, with a CAGR of +7.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Uncoated paper and paperboard in square with one side > 435 mm or with one side <= 435 mm and the other side > 297 mm in the unfolded state (14K tons) was the largest type of stationery products exported from Italy, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, uncoated paper and paperboard in square with one side > 435 mm or with one side <= 435 mm and the other side > 297 mm in the unfolded state exceeded the volume of the second product type, registers, account books, order books and receipt books (6.9K tons), twofold. Blotting pads and book covers (2.1K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.

From 2015 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of uncoated paper and paperboard in square with one side > 435 mm or with one side <= 435 mm and the other side > 297 mm in the unfolded state exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: registers, account books, order books and receipt books (-12.5% per year) and blotting pads and book covers (+4.8% per year).

In value terms, registers, account books, order books and receipt books ($85M) remains the largest type of stationery products exported from Italy, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by uncoated paper and paperboard in square with one side > 435 mm or with one side <= 435 mm and the other side > 297 mm in the unfolded state ($26M), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by blotting pads and book covers, with a 7.3% share.

From 2015 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of registers, account books, order books and receipt books exports stood at -6.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: uncoated paper and paperboard in square with one side > 435 mm or with one side <= 435 mm and the other side > 297 mm in the unfolded state (+1.6% per year) and blotting pads and book covers (+4.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the stationery product price stood at $5,709 per ton (FOB, Italy), picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the last eight-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The export price peaked at $5,954 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($10,327 per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($487 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
