Italy Sees a 24% Decline in Sulphates Imports, Dropping to $96M in 2023
Italy Sulphates Imports
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of sulphates (excluding those of aluminium and barium), when their volume decreased by -24.2% to 211K tons. Overall, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13%. Imports peaked at 331K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphates imports declined significantly to $96M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $126M in 2022, and then declined notably in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Spain (79K tons) constituted the largest supplier of sulphates to Italy, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphates imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (34K tons), twofold. China (30K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled -4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-5.0% per year) and China (+14.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest sulphates suppliers to Italy were Spain ($17M), Germany ($15M) and China ($14M), with a combined 48% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +8.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the sulphates price stood at $453 per ton (CIF, Italy), approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, sulphates import price increased by +58.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($1,246 per ton), while the price for France ($175 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+19.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
