Itochu Acquires 10.74% Stake in CSN’s Iron Ore Producer for $769 Million

Itochu to buy 10.74% stake in CSN's iron ore producer for $769m was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.

Japanese company Itochu has signed an agreement with Brazilian steel company Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) to acquire a 10.74% stake in CSN Mineração (CM) for around 4.42 billion reais ($769 million). This move enhances Itochu's existing investment in the company, having previously held an indirect 7.15% stake since 2008.

Brazil's Iron Ore Export Dynamics

Brazil, the world's second-largest exporter of iron ore, recorded an export volume of 378.1 million tons in 2023, as per data from the IndexBox platform. The export value reached an impressive $30.6 billion, with an average export price of $81 per tonne.

A Focus on Global Markets

Among the top markets for Brazilian iron ore, China dominated with imports worth $19.7 billion. Other significant importers included Malaysia ($1.7 billion), Japan ($1.2 billion), Bahrain ($1.1 billion), and Oman ($866.4 million).

Strengthening Partnerships for Green Steel

With this new investment, Itochu aims to fortify its partnership with CSN Mineração and play an active role in expanding the company's production infrastructure. The Casa de Pedra Mine, renowned for producing high-grade iron ore at low costs, plays a critical role in the steel industry's shift to lower carbon emissions.

Furthermore, Itochu's collaboration with EMSTEEL, an entity based in Abu Dhabi, focuses on advancing the supply chain for ferrous raw material intended for 'green' ironmaking. This strategic partnership will enable the production of green steel, characterised by significantly reduced carbon emissions, serving markets in Japan and beyond.
