Japan Witnessed a Staggering 12% Drop in Beef Prices, Hitting $5,337 per Ton

Japan Beef Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the beef price amounted to $5,337 per ton (CIF, Japan), with a decrease of -11.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 an increase of 13% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $6,985 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to April 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from New Zealand ($5,729 per ton) and Australia ($5,547 per ton), while the price for Canada ($4,066 per ton) and Mexico ($5,010 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled ($22,285 per ton), while the price for meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen ($4,229 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled (+0.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Beef Imports

In April 2023, overseas purchases of beef (cattle meat) were finally on the rise to reach 68K tons after two months of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, beef imports skyrocketed to $362M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Japan Beef Imports by Type

In April 2023, meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen (47K tons) constituted the largest type of beef supplied to Japan, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled (21K tons), twofold. Meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), frozen (119 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.2% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen stood at +1.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled (+0.3% per month) and meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), frozen (-0.4% per month).

In value terms, the most traded types of beef (cattle meat) in Japan were meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen ($197M), meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled ($163M) and meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled ($1.6M), together accounting for 100% of total imports.

Japan Beef Imports by Country

The United States (27K tons), Australia (27K tons) and Canada (7.9K tons) were the main suppliers of beef imports to Japan, together accounting for 92% of total imports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest beef suppliers to Japan were Australia ($150M), the United States ($148M) and Canada ($32M), together accounting for 91% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of +0.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
