Japan Copper Ore Imports
In 2023, copper ores and concentrates imports into Japan contracted to 4.8M tons, with a decrease of -7.8% compared with 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5.2M tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, copper ores and concentrates imports declined to $11.7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $13.7B in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Chile (1.7M tons) constituted the largest copper ores and concentrates supplier to Japan, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, copper ores and concentrates imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (757K tons), twofold. Indonesia (647K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Chile amounted to -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+0.3% per year) and Indonesia (+4.2% per year).
In value terms, Chile ($3.8B), Indonesia ($1.9B) and Australia ($1.9B) were the largest copper ores and concentrates suppliers to Japan, together comprising 64% of total imports. Peru, Canada, the United States, Panama and Papua New Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Panama, with a CAGR of +52.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the copper ore price stood at $2,446 per ton (CIF, Japan), waning by -7.2% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a slight increase from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 40%. The import price peaked at $2,636 per ton in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($3,405 per ton), while the price for Peru ($1,851 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Panama (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
