Japan Declares the End of Deflation and Signals Rate Hikes

Japan has "completely" ended deflation, paving the way for the central bank to proceed with rate hikes, according to Haruhiko Kuroda, the country's former central bank governor. Bloomberg reports that Kuroda, whose tenure was known for its ultra-easy monetary policies, made the statement at a conference in Tokyo.

Kuroda stated, "It's perfectly natural for the BOJ to conduct policy normalization," reinforcing speculations in the market of continued rate hikes. The yen achieved a two-month high earlier after a hawkish BOJ board member suggested authorities should at least double the benchmark rate from the current 0.5% by early next year.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, Japan's consumer prices have consistently risen at or above the Bank of Japan's targeted inflation rate for nearly three years through December, while wage growth has reached its fastest pace since 1997. This economic rebound underpins Kuroda's assertions of a "virtuous cycle between wages and inflation."

However, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's administration maintains a cautious stance, asserting that victory over deflation is premature with the persistent risk of a fallback to falling prices.
