Japan Graphite Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the graphite price amounted to $2,554 per ton (CIF, Japan), with an increase of 75% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a measured increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, graphite import price increased by +127.6% against November 2022 indices. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,679 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to February 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,493 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($776 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Graphite Imports
In February 2023, approximately 2.4K tons of graphite (natural) were imported into Japan; which is down by -61.9% against January 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 199% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 12K tons. From December 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, graphite imports declined sharply to $6M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when imports increased by 65% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $14M. From December 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Japan Graphite Imports by Country
In February 2023, China (2K tons) constituted the largest graphite supplier to Japan, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Madagascar (196 tons), tenfold. Sri Lanka (60 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at -6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+7.8% per month) and Sri Lanka (-5.6% per month).
In value terms, China ($5.2M) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Japan, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($337K), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 3.8% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (+2.0% per month) and Madagascar (+12.4% per month).
