In 2023, purchases abroad of kiwi fruits decreased by -14.3% to 96K tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -18.6% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 118K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, kiwi fruit imports reduced to $332M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 27%. Imports by Country

In 2023, New Zealand (92K tons) was the main kiwi fruit supplier to Japan, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (1.3K tons), with a 1.4% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from New Zealand amounted to +5.1%.

In value terms, New Zealand ($319M) constituted the largest supplier of kiwi fruits to Japan, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($5.7M), with a 1.7% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from New Zealand amounted to +4.6%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the kiwi fruit price stood at $3,450 per ton (CIF, Japan), rising by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $4,043 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($4,356 per ton), while the price for Chile ($2,554 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
