Price of Lithium Carbonate in Japan Reaches $67.8 per kg

Japan Lithium Carbonate Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the lithium carbonate price stood at $67,831 per ton (CIF, Japan), rising by 1.6% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated resilient growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +9.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, lithium carbonate import price decreased by -3.9% against February 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 49% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $70,587 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to April 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($71,992 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($56,895 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Lithium Carbonate Imports

In April 2023, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of lithium carbonates, when their volume increased by 85% to 2.3K tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, lithium carbonate imports skyrocketed to $153M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase.

Japan Lithium Carbonate Imports by Country

In April 2023, Chile (1.7K tons) constituted the largest lithium carbonate supplier to Japan, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium carbonate imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (318 tons), fivefold.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Chile stood at +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (+4.1% per month) and China (-1.0% per month).

In value terms, Chile ($117M) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonate to Japan, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($18M), with a 12% share of total imports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Chile totaled +12.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (+11.6% per month) and China (+1.7% per month).
