Price of Motorcycles and Scooters in Japan Rise by 4% to Average $5,852 per Unit

Japan Motorcycle And Scooter Export Price in July 2023

In July 2023, the motorcycle and scooter price stood at $5,852 per unit (FOB, Japan), increasing by 4.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 15% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $6,209 per unit in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($8,365 per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($3,086 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Motorcycle And Scooter Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with auxiliary motor, with reciprocating internal combustion piston engine of a cylinder capacity exceeding 800cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars ($8,761 per unit), while the average price for exports of motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine, of cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars ($2,593 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Japan Motorcycle And Scooter Exports

In July 2023, shipments abroad of motorcycles and scooters increased by 0.2% to 51K units, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the period from July 2022 to July 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 24% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 63K units in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motorcycle and scooter exports amounted to $300M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. In general, total exports indicated temperate growth from July 2022 to July 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports increased by +31.4% against May 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when exports increased by 26% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 391M units in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

These products were followed by motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine, of cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 500cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars, which accounted for a further 9.2%.

In value terms, motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with auxiliary motor, with reciprocating internal combustion piston engine of a cylinder capacity exceeding 800cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars ($134M), motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine of cylinder capacity exceeding 500cc but not exceeding 800cc, with or without sidecars; side-cars ($106M) and motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine, of cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars ($38M) were the most exported types of motorcycles and scooters from Japan worldwide, together comprising 92% of total exports. Motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine, of cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 500cc, with or without side-cars; side-cars lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7.6%.

The United States (12K units), France (6.7K units) and Italy (4.4K units) were the main destinations of motorcycle and scooter exports from Japan, together accounting for 45% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, the Dominican Republic, Australia, the UK, Cambodia, Germany and Canada, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($67M), France ($49M) and Italy ($33M) constituted the largest markets for motorcycle and scooter exported from Japan worldwide, together accounting for 50% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Australia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 32%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
