Japan's Pork Import Experiences a Slight Decline to $3.9 Billion in 2023

In 2023, supplies from abroad of pork decreased by -5.9% to 920K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. Imports peaked at 977K tons in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, pork imports shrank to $3.9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Imports by Country

the United States (226K tons), Canada (218K tons) and Spain (171K tons) were the main suppliers of pork imports to Japan, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Mexico, Denmark, Chile, Brazil and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +106.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pork suppliers to Japan were the United States ($980M), Canada ($952M) and Spain ($695M), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Mexico, Denmark, Chile, Brazil and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +100.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (523K tons), fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (393K tons) and frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (2.8K tons) were the main products of pork imports to Japan, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, pork with the largest imports in Japan were frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($2.2B), fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($1.7B) and frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($12M), together accounting for 100% of total imports. Fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat and frozen carcases of pig meat lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 0.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the pork price stood at $4,265 per ton (CIF, Japan), approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $5,411 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Mexico ($4,434 per ton) and Canada ($4,368 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($3,912 per ton) and Spain ($4,054 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
