Japan Pork Import Price in April 2023
In April 2023, the pork price amounted to $4,303 per ton (CIF, Japan), almost unchanged from the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.2% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,687 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to April 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Mexico ($4,420 per ton) and Canada ($4,373 per ton), while the price for Spain ($4,177 per ton) and Chile ($4,192 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Pork Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In April 2023, the products with the highest prices were fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($5,389 per ton) and fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($4,460 per ton), while the price for frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($4,234 per ton) and frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($4,365 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by fresh pork cut (+0.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Japan Pork Imports
In April 2023, purchases abroad of pork was finally on the rise to reach 110K tons after two months of decline. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Japan Pork Imports by Type
In April 2023, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (76K tons) constituted the largest type of pork supplied to Japan, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (33K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (325 tons), with a 0.3% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (-0.9% per month) and frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (+2.2% per month).
In value terms, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($322M) constituted the largest type of pork supplied to Japan, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($148M), with a 31% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, with a 0.3% share.
Japan Pork Imports by Country
Spain (29K tons), the United States (26K tons) and Canada (17K tons) were the main suppliers of pork imports to Japan, together accounting for 66% of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Mexico, the Netherlands, Brazil and Chile, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in Brazil (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($121M), the United States ($114M) and Canada ($75M) were the largest pork suppliers to Japan, together accounting for 66% of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Mexico, the Netherlands, Brazil and Chile, which together accounted for a further 31%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +2.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
