Japan Steel Stranded Wire Import Price in July 2023
In July 2023, the steel stranded wire price amounted to $2,082 per ton (CIF, Japan), declining by -2.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 6.2% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,329 per ton. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($4,006 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($997 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Japan Steel Stranded Wire Imports
In July 2023, the amount of iron or steel stranded wire, ropes and cables imported into Japan expanded remarkably to 9.5K tons, picking up by 13% on June 2023. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 42% month-to-month.
In value terms, steel stranded wire imports totaled $20M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when imports increased by 43% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $23M. From April 2023 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Japan Steel Stranded Wire Imports by Country
In July 2023, China (5.8K tons) constituted the largest supplier of steel stranded wire to Japan, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, steel stranded wire imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (1.3K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (691 tons), with a 7.3% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (-1.1% per month) and Indonesia (+3.0% per month).
In value terms, China ($10M) constituted the largest supplier of steel stranded wire to Japan, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($2.9M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 12% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (-1.1% per month) and Vietnam (+1.1% per month).
