Surge in Japan's TV Receiver Imports to $194M in November 2023

Japan Television Receiver Imports

In November 2023, overseas purchases of television receivers increased by 19% to 686K units, rising for the second consecutive month after three months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 780K units in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to November 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, television receiver imports skyrocketed to $194M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country

In November 2023, China (484K units) constituted the largest television receiver supplier to Japan, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, television receiver imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (84K units), sixfold. Thailand (63K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-2.8% per month) and Thailand (-1.7% per month).

In value terms, China ($125M) constituted the largest supplier of television receiver to Japan, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($43M), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 6.9% share.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-1.8% per month) and Thailand (+0.6% per month).

Imports by Type

In November 2023, reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a colour video display or screen (607K units) constituted the largest type of television receiver supplied to Japan, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a colour video display or screen exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, tuner blocks (79K units), eightfold.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2023, the television receiver price stood at $283 per unit (CIF, Japan), with an increase of 8.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($518 per unit), while the price for the Philippines ($201 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
