Japan's Import of Video Monitors Rises to $1.5 Billion in 2024

Japan Video Monitor Imports

In 2024, approx. 12M units of video monitors were imported into Japan; rising by 23% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +26.5% against 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2024 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, video monitor imports rose slightly to $1.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2014 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.7B. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (8.6M units) constituted the largest video monitor supplier to Japan, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, video monitor imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (445K units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (398K units), with a 4.1% share.

From 2014 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+38.9% per year) and South Korea (+8.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($1.2B) constituted the largest supplier of video monitors to Japan, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($132M), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 3.3% share.

From 2014 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+18.2% per year) and the Philippines (-3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the video monitor price amounted to $154 per unit (CIF, Japan), waning by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $174 per unit. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($627 per unit), while the price for South Korea ($96 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
