Japanese Companies Face Labor Shortages Amid Aging Population

Japanese companies are grappling with severe labor shortages as the nation's population continues to shrink and age rapidly, impacting two-thirds of businesses, according to a recent Reuters survey. The survey, conducted by Nikkei Research, highlights a critical concern that these supply-side constraints could hinder economic growth across the country.

According to the survey, conducted from December 24 to January 10 among 505 companies with 235 respondents, 66% of businesses reported that labor shortfalls were having a serious or fairly serious impact on their operations. This shortage is particularly pronounced among non-manufacturers and small firms. Furthermore, the number of bankruptcies attributed to labor shortages increased by 32% in 2024, reaching a record high of 342 cases, as reported by Teikoku Databank.

In response to these challenges, almost 69% of Japanese companies are intensifying recruitment activities for new graduates, while 59% are extending retirement ages and re-hiring retired employees. Despite these measures, nearly a third of respondents indicated that the labor shortage is worsening, with a mere 4% observing improvements.

The priorities of companies are shifting towards capital investment and wage hikes to address these labor shortages, with 69% planning capital investments and 63% focusing on enhancing wages and other human resources-related investments by 2025. This initiative is in line with governmental policies aimed at fostering economic growth through increased wages and investments.

Price Adjustments Amid Economic Pressures

With escalating wages and a weak yen inflating import costs, 44% of Japanese companies plan to raise their prices this year. In contrast, 17% intend to maintain their current prices, and 26% plan adjusted pricing strategies to balance various costs. Inflationary pressures are evident, with Tokyo's core consumer price index rising 2.4% in December compared to a year earlier, suggesting potential interest rate hikes in the near future.
