Japanese Yen Showcases Resilience Amid US Dollar Strength

The Japanese yen demonstrated considerable resilience in the face of a strengthening US dollar, as recent tariff implementations by President Donald Trump raised concerns among investors. Bloomberg reports that this suggests a continued perception of the yen as a safe-haven currency during turbulent times (source).

On Monday, the yen advanced by up to 0.3% against the dollar, momentarily dipping 0.4% to 155.76 per dollar as observed at 10:12 a.m. in Tokyo. Meanwhile, the euro and currencies such as the Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand dollars each saw declines of over 1% versus the greenback, highlighting a broader sentiment of risk aversion amid fresh US-initiated tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.

According to IndexBox, the yen remains the only Group-of-10 currency to have appreciated against the dollar in the year 2025 so far, bolstered by the Bank of Japan's current monetary policy trajectory and the yen's advantageous positioning relative to elevated US Treasury yields.

Economists speculate that this yen strength could afford the Bank of Japan greater flexibility in maintaining or modifying its interest rate strategy, having raised rates last month with expectations pointing to a potential pause until at least July to September.

As observed policy preferences might influence currency performance, Gareth Berry, a strategist at Macquarie Bank Ltd. in Singapore, noted, "The yen is rediscovering its safe haven credentials." This shift is partially influenced by Japan's narrowing interest rate differential with the US, despite the dollar's yield supremacy over the yen.

Moreover, the currency's appeal as a haven is further demonstrated by its comparable performance to the Swiss franc. This marks the first instance in over two years where the yen's carry — evaluated through three-month forward-implied yields — has matched that of the franc.
