Japan's JERA Aims to Boost U.S. LNG Purchases Amid Global Demand Surge

Japan's largest LNG buyer, JERA, plans to significantly increase its purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States as it seeks to diversify its supply base and meet the rising energy demand fueled by the booming data center and AI sectors. According to Reuters, JERA is looking to reduce its reliance on the Asia-Pacific region, from which it sources nearly half of its annual 30-35 million metric tons of LNG.

Ryosuke Tsugaru, head of JERA's LNG division, revealed these expansion plans at the World Economic Forum in Davos. While JERA currently obtains 3.2 million tons of LNG from the U.S. through long-term contracts, Tsugaru noted the firm's intent to increase this figure without specifying the exact volume expected. In 2024, the U.S., the world's largest LNG exporter, shipped approximately 88.3 million tonnes of LNG globally.

The U.S. liquefied natural gas industry has seen substantial growth, with an export value of USD 33.4 billion in 2023, and a slight decrease to 29 billion in 2024, as per data from the IndexBox platform. Top buyers included the Netherlands (USD 4.4 billion), France (USD 3.8 billion), and the United Kingdom (USD 3.5 billion), showcasing the U.S.'s broad international market reach.

JERA's push for diversification includes potential engagements with Middle Eastern suppliers to achieve a geographically balanced portfolio. The company maintains a positive outlook on long-term partnerships with Qatar, despite increasing competition from nations like the U.S. and others offering more flexible contract terms.

Overall, the strategic move points to a developing trend towards more globally diverse LNG sourcing strategies, as major utilities like JERA adapt to both the opportunities and challenges presented by the evolving energy landscape.
