Japan's Manufacturing Sector Faces Continuing Slump Amid Weak Demand

Japan's factory activity has experienced its sharpest decline in 10 months, driven by sluggish demand, according to a recent Reuters report. The report highlights a more than two-year low in business confidence, indicating significant challenges in the manufacturing sector.

The final au Jibun Bank Japan manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) dropped to 48.7 in January 2025, slightly below the preliminary figure and down from December's 49.6. This marks the seventh consecutive month where the PMI has been under the critical 50.0 level, delineating contraction from growth in the industry.

S&P Global Market Intelligence's Usamah Bhatti noted continued "muted trends" across the manufacturing landscape at the start of the year. A key subindex illustrating output showed contraction for the fifth month, particularly highlighting production cuts in both investment and intermediate goods.

Data from the IndexBox platform further reflects these challenges, with new orders having declined for 20 straight months. Sectors such as automotive and semiconductors have been notably affected, although some positivity came from a slower decline in overseas orders, buoyed by strong demand from Taiwan.

Inflation remains a persistent concern for Japanese manufacturers, as input and output prices remained elevated. Despite these pressures, employment figures showed resilience, attributed to the hiring of experienced personnel and addressing vacancies.
