JFE and JSW Steel Finalize Acquisition of Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel India

In a strategic move to strengthen their presence in the Indian steel market, JFE Steel and JSW Steel have finalized the acquisition of Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel India through their joint venture, JSW JFE Electrical Steel. This acquisition, valued at approximately $457 million, marks a significant milestone for the companies.

The joint venture is now set to amplify its focus on the production of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), with an eye on the burgeoning Indian market. The investment aligns with the partners' strategy to meet India's growing demand for GOES over the medium and long term, while establishing a fully-integrated production and sales system.

According to the latest data from IndexBox, India's import market for flat-rolled, silicon-electrical steel, grain-oriented varieties saw an increase from $540.1 million in 2023 to $553.6 million in 2024, signifying a robust demand. Leading source countries include Japan ($189.1 million), China ($178.5 million), and Russia ($99.2 million).

Strategic Expansion and Investment Plans

The acquisition facilitates not only an immediate entry into the market but also a technological upgrade, courtesy of a technology package transfer from Thyssenkrupp. This new venture builds on a long-standing relationship between JFE and JSW, which began with a strategic comprehensive agreement in 2009 encompassing automotive steel solutions, environmental initiatives, and technology transfer.

Moreover, continuing their expansion strategy, JSW Steel and South Korea's POSCO have announced a joint investment plan of approximately $7.73 billion in a new steel plant in Odisha, with a planned initial capacity of 5 million tons per year. This plan highlights their commitment to tapping into the growing demand for steel in India.
