JSW Steel Sees 2% Production Rise Despite 71% Profit Drop

India's JSW Steel has announced a year-on-year increase of 2% in its consolidated steel production, reaching 7.03 million tons in the third quarter of fiscal year 2024/2025. This marks a pivotal moment for the company as stated in their recent report.

Despite the production increase, JSW Steel faced significant challenges this quarter with its consolidated net profit plummeting by 71% year-on-year to 7.17 billion rupees ($83.2 million). The drop in profitability was chiefly attributed to exceptional charges of Rs 1.03 billion from the now-abandoned Chhattisgarh coal block investment, alongside a decrease in steel prices and reduced demand.

On a positive note, domestic sales in India soared by 14% year-on-year, achieving a historic high of 5.99 million tons from strong retail and institutional client demand. This performance was complemented by capacity utilization at Indian production facilities reaching 91% during this period.

Looking ahead, JSW Steel is eyeing joint ventures with South Korea's POSCO, planning to invest Rs 650 billion ($7.73 billion) in a new steel facility in Odisha, aimed at bolstering their position in India's expanding steel market.
