Kazakhstan Proposes Extension of Scrap Export Ban

The Ministry of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan has proposed to extend the ban on the export of scrap materials for another six months. The draft order, published on January 24, aims to ensure the abundance of raw materials for domestic metallurgical enterprises and to support the production of higher value-added products.

According to the regulations, the export ban covers both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap and waste, as well as used pipes and railway track materials. The initiative not only strives to enhance the local industry but also aligns with environmental goals by minimizing energy consumption associated with the processing of secondary metals.

In recent industry developments, Kazakhstan witnessed a significant 9.5% increase in steel production in 2024, reaching 4.17 million tons. Local players like Qarmet Iron and Steel Works notably surpassed production targets across various segments, with steel and coke output climbing 15% and 18%, respectively.

Referencing trade data from the IndexBox platform, Kazakhstan's export value for ferrous waste and scrap of cast iron amounted to USD 65.8K in 2024, up from USD 63.2K in 2023. A substantial portion of these exports, valued at USD 65.2K in 2023, was directed to Russia, while Latvia accounted for USD 1.2K. Contrasting this, the import value remained stable with Kyrgyzstan leading the suppliers, contributing USD 9.6K in 2023.
