Kevin O'Leary Leads $20 Billion Bid for TikTok's US Operations

Investor and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary has announced a significant bid for TikTok, offering up to $20 billion to secure the popular social media platform's operations in the United States. According to an interview with Yahoo Finance, O'Leary has teamed up with a consortium of business professionals led by billionaire Frank McCourt Jr. to present their proposal, notably excluding TikTok's algorithm from the deal.

McCourt, noted for founding the internet advocacy group Project Liberty and formerly owning the LA Dodgers, highlighted the consortium's commitment to keeping TikTok operational for its 170 million U.S. users. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing a bipartisan federal law that could force TikTok's sale or ban by January 19 due to national security concerns, bringing urgency to the proposed acquisition.

Despite Chinese parent company ByteDance resistance, O'Leary is optimistic about the transaction, emphasizing the potential financial loss ByteDance faces if the platform is banned. The investor asserts that divesting TikTok could protect shareholder interests, potentially averting a loss estimated between $30 billion and $40 billion.
