KKR Explores Sale of Japan's Seiyu Chain

U.S. private equity firm KKR is exploring the sale of its stake in supermarket chain Seiyu. According to a report by the Nikkei business daily, KKR is looking to sell its shares in a deal that could be valued at several hundred billion yen (several billion dollars). More details on the bidding process have emerged as major retailers including Aeon, Pan Pacific International Holdings, and Trial Holdings, as well as investment funds, have expressed interest. KKR, which currently holds 85% of Seiyu, is reportedly considering the sale alongside Walmart, which owns the remaining 15% stake.

The interest in acquiring Seiyu highlights the ongoing consolidation trend within Japan's highly competitive retail sector.
