KKR Initiates Sale of Stake in Philippine Fintech Maya

Global investment firm KKR has taken a significant step in restructuring its investment portfolio by appointing Goldman Sachs to handle the sale of its substantial minority stake in the Philippine financial technology company Maya. According to Reuters, the sale could potentially value Maya at over $2 billion.

Maya, known for its comprehensive digital payment and banking services, including cryptocurrency and micro-investments, has emerged as a leader in the Philippines' digital banking sector. Currently, Maya Bank boasts a customer base of 5.4 million users, making it the top digital bank in the country. The company's growth trajectory has also been bolstered by its last significant fundraising round in April 2022, which saw it amass $210 million, raising its valuation to $1.4 billion.

KKR's involvement with Maya dates back to October 2018 when it, along with Tencent Holdings, invested up to $175 million in new shares of the then-named Voyager Innovations. This marked KKR's inaugural private equity investment in the Philippines, aligning with its strategy to tap into burgeoning markets driven by rapid technological advancements.

The latest financial metrics reveal that Maya ended 2024 with deposit balances totaling 39 billion Philippine pesos, equating to approximately $665.87 million, and loan disbursements reaching 68 billion pesos. Since 2022, the digital bank has dispensed a total of 92 billion pesos in loans.
