Laopu Gold Shines in a Luxury Market Amid Global Economic Challenges

Amidst a backdrop of tepid consumer spending and sluggish sales for global luxury brands in China, Laopu Gold has emerged as a beacon of success. According to a recent article by the South China Morning Post, this Beijing-based jeweller has captivated affluent consumers with its unique fixed price model and intricate craftsmanship.

In the first half of 2024, Laopu Gold reported sales of 3.5 billion yuan (US$482.7 million) for its pure gold and gem-set jewellery, marking a staggering 148% increase from the previous year. The company's net profit also surged nearly 200% to 588 million yuan during the same period. With only 36 stores across Greater China, Laopu's stock shares soared by more than 550% since its trading debut, peaking at HK$457 (US$58.7) on Tuesday.

While gold prices have been on an upward trajectory for nearly a year, impacting mass-market jewellery demand adversely, Laopu Gold's focus on the high-end market has paid off handsomely. Affluent consumers, less affected by broader economic conditions, view gold not just as an accessory but also as a valuable investment. This sentiment has allowed Laopu to outperform its competitors, such as Chow Tai Fook Jewellery, which operates on a dynamic pricing model.

The company's decision to implement a fixed price model, despite a significant markup reflecting its craftsmanship, has resulted in a gross margin of 41.3% for the first half of 2024. In contrast, Chow Tai Fook's gross margin lingers around 20%.

IndexBox data highlights the evolving dynamics of China's non-silver precious metal jewellery market. In 2024, China's export value reached USD 6.9 billion, a decrease from USD 9.7 billion in 2023. Hong Kong SAR remains the largest export market, with an export value of USD 4.6 billion in 2024. On the import side, China's 2024 import value stood at USD 3.4 billion, down from USD 5.1 billion in the previous year, with France as the top importer contributing USD 1.4 billion.
