Lennar Experiences Sharp Decline in Shares Following Earnings Report

Shares of Lennar Corporation (LEN) took a hit on Thursday after the prominent home builder released quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street expectations. The company reported fourth-quarter earnings per share (EPS) of $4.06, which coupled with a 9% year-over-year decline in revenue to $9.95 billion, failed to meet the estimates published by Visible Alpha.

The drop in revenues was mainly attributed to a 7% decrease in the number of home deliveries, totaling 22,206, and a 2.5% reduction in the average sale price per home to $430,000. Moreover, new orders saw a 3% decline to 16,895 homes, with their dollar value slipping 1% to $7.18 billion.

Stuart Miller, Co-CEO of Lennar, commented on the tough landscape facing the housing market, noting that although the Federal Reserve had reduced short-term interest rates, a spike of nearly 100 basis points in mortgage rates over the quarter persisted. According to IndexBox, this situation has intensified affordability constraints despite strong demand and an ongoing shortage in housing supply.

Looking forward, Lennar anticipates new orders in the current quarter to range between 17,500 and 18,000, short of the 20,000 anticipated by analysts polled by Visible Alpha. Additionally, they project deliveries to be between 17,000 and 17,500. This guidance has prompted a 4.5% decrease in Lennar's shares, taking the stock to its lowest annual level, closing at $139.37.
