LG CNS Falls on Trading Debut After Largest Korean IPO in Over Two Years

South Korea's largest initial public offering in more than two years experienced a disappointing start as LG CNS Co.'s shares slumped on their debut. According to Bloomberg, the technology-services unit of LG Group saw its stock dive by as much as 11.3% during trading on the main Kospi market. By the end of the session, the shares closed down 9.9% at 55,800 won, a significant drop from its IPO price of 61,900 won (source).

The underperformance of LG CNS, post-IPO, reflects a growing investor skepticism regarding the potential for immediate gains from IPOs in Seoul. Despite initial expectations for a robust market entrance, particularly driven by its ambition in fields like artificial intelligence, LG CNS's listing outcome aligned with a broader trend noted in the Korean market. Bloomberg's data highlights that from the 35 companies that went public in the past three months, only about 25% are trading above their IPO prices. This mirrors the cooling investor enthusiasm for new listings.

South Korean authorities have recognized the need to stabilize the IPO market and are planning reforms to encourage longer-term investments. As stated by Kim Dojoon, CEO and investment officer at Zian Investment Management, "IPO stocks have been bad lately," underscoring concerns about an overheated IPO market.

Market observers anticipated better performance from LG CNS, driven by the stock market's recovery post-political turmoil. The hope that LG CNS could benefit from the AI boom added to this anticipation. Despite the high expectations, LG CNS's debut was likened to the broader trend of Korean IPOs that have not fared well, as evidenced by similar performances by companies like Samsung SDS Co.
