Liberated Brands Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

In a significant development for the retail sector, Liberated Brands has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with plans to close its U.S. retail outlets. Fox Business reported that the filing aims to facilitate an organized monetization and disposition of its businesses involving well-known brands like Quiksilver, Billabong, and Volcom.

The company has submitted a motion to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to close approximately 124 stores across the United States as part of the bankruptcy proceedings. Liberated Brands estimates its assets and liabilities in the bankruptcy petition to range between $100 million and $500 million.

Upon announcement, the U.S. stores will remain operational while the company initiates the closure process, including a liquidation sale. The status of its nine store locations in Hawaii is still under negotiation, as mentioned in the official release.

According to CEO Todd Hymel in court documents, "macroeconomic issues, including a rapid and dramatic rise in interest rates, persistent inflation, supply chain delays, a decline in customer demand well below the historical trendline, shifting consumer preferences, and substantial fixed costs" severely impacted the company's financial standing.

While the crisis has prompted the withdrawal of licenses to operate brands such as Volcom, RVCA, and Billabong in North America, these licenses have been reassigned to new operators, ensuring continuity for consumers eager for these brands, as noted in court filings.

The company has been collaborating closely with Liberated Brands to ensure a smooth transition of key licenses to reliable operators within its network.
