Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Faces Bond Downgrades Amid Wildfire Concerns

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has experienced a significant downgrade of its municipal bonds. Bloomberg reports that S&P Global Ratings has lowered the rating on LADWP's power system bonds by two notches, dropping from an AA- to an A rating. This comes as the department faces challenges from destructive wildfires in the region.

S&P's assessment indicates that the bond ratings are on CreditWatch with negative implications, hinting at further downgrades should circumstances worsen or if the utility infrastructure is linked to fire outbreaks.

Bloomberg notes that although LADWP's infrastructure has not been identified as a cause of the ongoing wildfires, the increasing vulnerability of the utility to potential financial liability claims poses a critical challenge. With a "one-in-two chance" of further downgrades within the next 90 days, the utility must navigate this precarious situation to stabilize its financial standing.
