Los Angeles Wildfires Cause Record Insurance Losses

The wildfires engulfing Los Angeles have been labeled as the most destructive ever for the city, likely leading to billions in insured losses. Ratings agencies have indicated that this disaster could eclipse previous records, marking a significant impact on the insurance industry.

The Pacific Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, and other surrounding neighborhoods are currently suffering catastrophic damage. Morningstar DBRS analysts estimate these insured losses could soar beyond $8 billion, surpassing the 2018 Woolsey fire in California, which previously caused substantial financial grief with over $6 billion in losses.

Both residential and commercial properties in these areas are experiencing high-value losses. Moody's senior credit officer Jasper Cooper adds that given these areas' property values, insured losses are expected to amount to billions. This is exacerbated by the growing difficulty homeowners face in obtaining insurance, particularly in regions prone to natural disasters, as many insurers have exited these markets.

Moody's analyst Denise Rappmund emphasizes that the broader insurance market in California will continue to face severe repercussions due to these wildfires. Rising recovery costs are predicted to inflate premiums and could further limit the availability of property insurance. Moreover, Morningstar DBRS suggests a significant portion of the losses could remain uninsured or may fall under the California FAIR plan, a last-resort insurance option for those unable to secure traditional coverage.

Amidst this chaos, JPMorgan has notably revised its estimates, projecting insured losses could peak at $20 billion, highlighting the continuously escalating damage as noted by Thomson Reuters publication The Insurer.
