LyondellBasell Reports Fourth-Quarter Loss Amid Decline in Polyethylene Demand

LyondellBasell, a major player in the petrochemical industry, announced a loss for the fourth quarter, primarily due to diminished demand in critical markets like Europe and Asia. Reuters reported that the economic stagnation in the euro zone, exacerbated by high inflation, is impeding recovery prospects. In Germany, which is LyondellBasell's second-largest market after the US, competition from abroad and a sluggish industrial sector have pressured the company's margins.

Polyethylene markets, essential for LyondellBasell's revenue, have witnessed significant shifts. According to IndexBox data, the export value of Polyethylene in Primary Forms from Germany decreased from USD 2.7 billion in 2023 to USD 2.1 billion in 2024. Germany's exports mainly targeted Italy (USD 313.9 million), Poland (USD 282.5 million), and France (USD 208.9 million) in 2023. Meanwhile, imports saw a decrease from USD 2.5 billion in 2023 to USD 1.9 billion in 2024, with Belgium (USD 751.9 million) and the Netherlands (USD 589.5 million) being top import sources.

Amid these market dynamics, LyondellBasell's olefins & polyolefins-Americas unit registered core earnings of USD 496 million, dropping from USD 604 million a year ago, mainly driven by lower polyethylene sales volumes. The company's intermediates & derivatives segment also reported a 5.6% decrease in adjusted core profit. Total quarterly revenue fell to USD 9.5 billion from the previous year's USD 9.93 billion. Despite posting a net loss of USD 603 million, the company exceeded analysts' expectations by achieving an adjusted profit of 75 cents per share, surpassing the average estimate of 72 cents.
