Macquarie Group Shuts Down US Debt Capital Markets Arm to Pivot to Private Credit

Macquarie Group Ltd. is closing its US debt capital markets division, a strategic shift that marks the company's intensified focus on private credit. According to a report by Bloomberg, this move will affect about 80 staff within the firm's investment banking segment, Macquarie Capital. Employees are expected to be either reassigned within the company or exit as a result of the decision.

This realignment was communicated to employees during a town hall meeting and involves divesting positions accumulated in US debt markets over the next two years. This is anticipated to free up balance sheet capacity for expanding their private credit operations, among other purposes. As of September 30, Macquarie's committed private credit portfolio stood at over AU$22.5 billion (US$14.1 billion).

The rise of the private credit market has caused significant shifts across Wall Street, compelling investment banks to reassess and restructure their business strategies. Some have formed partnerships with private lenders, while others engage in mergers and acquisitions involving asset managers. Macquarie's private lending activities include providing senior, junior, and structured loans to businesses, as well as real estate financing, with a concentration in technology, media, and telecommunications sectors, as well as financial institutions like insurance brokers, as highlighted in their 2023 presentation.
