In an extraordinary shift over a brief span, swap market traders have surged their bets, almost guaranteeing a rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) at its upcoming meeting. Bloomberg reports that overnight index swaps revealed a 99% probability for a move at the BOJ's January 23-24 meeting, escalating sharply from 71% midweek. This wave of anticipation was strengthened by Governor Kazuo Ueda's comments that heightened confidence over potential wage increases, driving the yen higher.

The yen, buoyed by these developments, appears set for its largest weekly advance since November, with a modest uptick of 0.1% to 155.04 against the dollar, as of mid-morning in Tokyo. Concurrently, Japan's government bond yields have been climbing, spotlighting an increase in the 2-year yield to its apex since 2008, aligning with enhanced monetary policy expectations.

"It's now almost certain that the BOJ will raise interest rates next week," commented Yukio Ishizuki, a senior strategist at Daiwa Securities Co., Tokyo. While Donald Trump's policies remain a potential wild card, Ishizuki downplays their likelihood of inciting market volatility.

Corroborating this sentiment, data reveals that nearly 75% of economists surveyed echo this rising conviction for an imminent rate hike, a sentiment fueled by Ueda's pronouncements. Additionally, the dollar-yen's one-week implied volatility, which encompasses the decision date, has spiked to a month-high, further reflecting heightened market sensitivity to BOJ's impending policy decisions.
