Match Group's Struggle with Tinder's Growth Continues
Wall Street's relationship with the online dating giant Match Group has hit another rough patch as the company reported new developments this week. According to a recent report, slowing growth for Match Group's flagship app, Tinder, has placed further strain on investor confidence. Many had hoped that the company's first-ever analyst meeting would restore optimism, but with projected declines, there was no such luck.
Match Group announced long-term targets for revenue and adjusted earnings growth through 2027 in line with analyst projections. However, the forecast of a low single-digit decline in direct revenue from Tinder next year, compared to an expected 2% gain, disheartened many investors. Despite plans for a $1.5 billion buyback and the company's first quarterly dividend, Match Group's share price has continued to fall, tumbling 6% since the meeting.
Tinder remains in the spotlight as the key issue. The app boasts 47 million monthly active users, far exceeding the user base of Hinge, its next-largest sibling app within Match Group's portfolio. However, Tinder's massive scale has made it a target for bad actors and fraudulent accounts. The brand's long-standing image as a hookup tool also poses a challenge, one that Match is striving to overcome. "The perception that Tinder is mainly for hookups has decreased 12 percentage points in the U.S. and the U.K. since our brand work began two years ago," stated Faye Iosotaluno, Tinder's Chief Executive, at the analyst meeting. "We're going to keep investing to drive home the message that Tinder delivers against many types of outcomes."
As part of a strategy to enhance the user experience, Tinder plans to invest heavily in its platform, with new features including face photo requirements and a "liveness check" for authenticating users. The implementation of more advanced AI technology to increase match quality and a new "double-dating" feature are expected to refresh the app's appeal. These changes, once implemented, could address concerns regarding monthly active user growth caused by a "stale product," as noted by Nathan Feather from Morgan Stanley.
Despite the promising long-term vision for Tinder, Iosotaluno has wisely tempered expectations for the short term. "I'd like to tell you we could see faster financial performance, but the reality is that these turnarounds take time," she explained. Investors are currently in a holding pattern, looking for tangible improvements in Tinder's business. Feather added, "We found the product vision compelling, but it will need to be paired with strong execution."
While dating apps face challenges such as user fatigue following the pandemic lockdowns, the industry's future appears secure as the world continues to become more digital. According to data from the IndexBox platform, the global online dating services market is expected to continue its growth trajectory over the coming years.
With Match now trading around 14 times forward earnings, a record low and a 33% reduction from the average over the past three years, low expectations might afford Tinder the opportunity to reignite its appeal with users and investors alike.
