U.S. MDF Import Price June 2022
The average mdf import price stood at $655 per cubic meter in June 2022, reducing by -4.5% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to June 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 an increase of 7.6% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $686 per cubic meter in May 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($1,384 per cubic meter), while the price for Vietnam ($196 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. MDF Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In June 2022, the product with the highest price was medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm ($702 per cubic meter), while the price for medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness not exceeding 5 mm ($519 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm (+2.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. MDF Imports
In June 2022, imports of mdf into the United States stood at 279K cubic meters, almost unchanged from the previous month. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from January 2022 to June 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +8.7% over the last five-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.0% against January 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 28% against the previous month. Imports peaked in June 2022.
In value terms, mdf imports reduced to $183M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from January 2022 to June 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +10.5% over the last five-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.8% against January 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 27% m-o-m. Imports peaked at $189M in May 2022, and then fell modestly in the following month.
U.S. MDF Imports by Type
In June 2022, medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm (206K cubic meters) constituted the largest type of mdf supplied to the United States, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm (39K cubic meters), fivefold.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm amounted to +7.9%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm (+12.9% per month) and medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness not exceeding 5 mm (+9.9% per month).
In value terms, medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm ($138M) constituted the largest type of mdf supplied to the United States, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by medium density fibreboard (mdf), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm ($27M), with a 15% share of total imports.
U.S. MDF Imports by Country
Chile (71K cubic meters), Canada (60K cubic meters) and China (32K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of mdf imports to the United States, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Brazil, Germany, Vietnam, Turkey, Mexico, Austria and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +50.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Chile ($52M), Canada ($44M) and Germany ($19M) appeared to be the largest mdf suppliers to the United States, together comprising 63% of total imports. China, Brazil, Austria, Mexico, Turkey, Vietnam and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
